How the calculation works
Position sizing answers one question: how many lots can I trade so that if my stop loss is hit, I lose exactly the amount I planned, and no more. The formula is:
Lot size = Risk amount ÷ (Stop loss in pips × Pip value per lot)On XAUUSD, one pip is a $0.10 price move, worth $10 per standard lot. So a trader with a $10,000 account risking 1% ($100) on a trade with a 50 pip stop loss should open 100 ÷ (50 × 10) = 0.20 lots. If the stop is hit, the loss is $100. Exactly as planned.
The calculator floors the result to the 0.01 broker lot step and also shows the margin your broker will lock at your chosen leverage, so you can confirm the position actually fits your account.
Frequently asked questions
How is lot size calculated for XAUUSD?
Lot size = risk amount ÷ (stop loss in pips × pip value per lot). On XAUUSD, one pip is a $0.10 price move and is worth $10 per 1.00 lot. Example: risking $100 with a 50 pip stop gives 100 ÷ (50 × 10) = 0.20 lots.
What is one pip on gold (XAUUSD)?
Most MT5 brokers quote gold to two decimals, and one pip is a $0.10 move in the gold price. That makes one pip worth $10 per standard lot (100 oz), $1 per mini lot (0.10) and $0.10 per micro lot (0.01).
How much should I risk per trade?
Most professional traders risk between 0.5% and 2% of their account per trade. At 1% risk, you can survive a long losing streak without meaningful damage. Every LazyAlgos EA calculates this automatically using the same math as this calculator.
What does the margin figure mean?
Margin is the collateral your broker locks to open the position: (lots × contract size × price) ÷ leverage. If required margin approaches your balance, the position is too large for your account at that leverage.
